Celebration Concert
6:30 PM

In 2002, Lynn Cohen and Beverly Fettman approached Dr. Jonathan Dzik and asked him to form a choir at the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale and to become the group's director. Jonathan agreed, provided that regular attendance at weekly rehearsals would lead to an annual performance. In that first year, The HIR Community Choir consisted of eighteen people united by a common interest in Jewish choral music.

Now in its 15th season the choir has many more members -  divided among the soprano, alto, tenor and bass sections. We have performed at synagogues, senior residences, communitycenters, the Johnson Avenue Street Fair, the Riverdale Y, City Hall, the Bronx Courthouse and as seen in the picture above at Shea Stadium. We have reeceived the Riverdale Jewish Community Council's community service award. The choir sings in five languages: Hebrew, Yiddish, English, Ladino and Italian.

We meet weekly on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM at the H.I.R. Rehearsals for the sping will begin on Febreuary 8, 2017. The theme will be "Jerusalem at 50", commemorating the Jubilee year of the reunification of Jerusalem during the "6-Day War" in 1967. A concert is scheduled on Yom Yerushalayim on Wednesday, May 24, 2017. Please save the date.
